Our Students
You'll find students of every age and background in our classes: primary, elementary, junior and senior high school students, college students, homemakers, and business people. Some students study English for the purpose of traveling, working or studying abroad, or to satisfy a domestic employment requirement. Some of the children and high school students may be studying at their parents' request. However, many students study for purely social reasons; it gives them a chance to make friends with people from other countries. Some students have been studying together at ECC for several years so at there can be a friendly, "club" atmosphere in the classroom. The majority of our students have had prior contact with English. Most Japanese study English for six years in junior and senior high school, many university students also study English, and the media and advertising are saturated with English. However, most of our students' exposure is to written English. High school classes are designed to prepare the students for university entrance exams, which often have no speaking or listening component. So, while they may be familiar with the written language, they find conversing - especially with native speakers - a real challenge. |
